5 Myths About Hair Extensions You Need to Stop Believing

Let's be honest: there's a ton of bad advice about hair extensions on social media. Influencers are selling 30-second TikToks on hair care that leave out critical context. Beauty supply stores are pushing products that actively damage extensions. Well-meaning stylists are repeating myths they learned years ago. And if you follow this advice, your extensions will fail. After 21 years behind the chair, I've heard every piece of bad advice. Here are the five myths that need to stop. MYTH #1: "You Don't Need to Shampoo Extensions More Than Once a Month" This is the most damaging myth in the entire extension world. Truth: Extensions need to be shampooed 1-2 times per week. Not monthly. Weekly. Why? Extensions don't get sebum (natural oil) from a scalp like your natural hair does. Without those oils to protect the strand, buildup accumulates faster. Sweat, dust, conditioner residue, environmental pollutants—they all collect on the hair shaft. This buildup makes strands stick together and tangle. It dulls the shine. It weakens the bonds. It shortens the lifespan. Shampooing frequently with sulfate-free shampoo removes buildup and keeps hair clean, shiny, and healthy. MYTH #2: "All Shampoos Work the Same on Extensions" Absolutely false. Truth: Sulfate-containing shampoos will damage and destroy your extensions within weeks. Why? Sulfates are surfactants designed to strip oils. That's their job. On natural hair, this is somewhat okay because your scalp produces more oil. On extensions, stripping oils means drying out hair that has no source of moisture replacement. Use sulfate-free, extension-specific shampoos. Your hair will last 3x longer. MYTH #3: "Expensive Extensions Are Always Better" Price doesn't always equal quality. Truth: You can buy $200 non-Remy hair that's worthless and $400 authentic Remy hair that lasts years. The price tag tells you very little about actual quality. What matters: the sourcing, the processing, and the cuticle integrity. Some small brands know hair better than massive corporations charging premium prices for average quality. MYTH #4: "Your Stylist Doesn't Matter As Much As the Hair" Wrong. Your stylist matters enormously. Truth: I've seen premium raw hair destroyed by a bad installation, and I've seen decent quality hair look amazing installed by someone who knows what they're doing. Your stylist needs to: - Understand your natural hair type and texture - Match extension texture to your hair (not just length) - Install bonds properly without damaging natural hair - Educate you on care (most clients don't know how to maintain extensions) - Use quality tools and techniques Bad installation = failed extensions, regardless of hair quality. MYTH #5: "All Raw Hair Is The Same" Definitely not. Truth: Raw hair varies enormously by source, processing, and how it's been handled. Raw Indian hair is different from raw Vietnamese hair. Raw hair from one factory might be incredible, while raw hair from another is mediocre. Storage conditions, humidity levels, handling during shipping—all of it affects quality. The supplier you buy from matters. Not all raw hair sellers are equal. BOTTOM LINE If you've been following any of these myths, stop. Start shampooing weekly with sulfate-free shampoo. Focus on authentic hair from suppliers you trust. Work with experienced stylists. Get educated on proper care. Do these things and your extensions will blow your mind with how good they look and how long they last.
