Before Installing Extensions (The 4-Week Prep)
Most people show up to installation day unprepared. Then they're shocked when results disappoint. The 4 weeks before installation determine the quality of your result.
PART ONE: WHY PRE-INSTALLATION PREP MATTERS
Your natural hair is the foundation. Poor foundation equals poor installation results. Extensions can't work with severely damaged natural hair, brittle weak strands, buildup-laden scalp, unhealthy hair follicles. Healthy natural hair equals perfect installation canvas.
PART TWO: WEEK 1 - CLARIFY & RESET
Week 1 Focus: Remove buildup.
What to Do: Use clarifying shampoo (removes product buildup), deep condition intensively (restore moisture), assess scalp health, note any concerns (scalp irritation thinness damage).
Why: You need a clean canvas. Buildup prevents proper bond placement.
PART THREE: WEEK 2 - STRENGTHEN & CONDITION
Week 2 Focus: Build strength.
What to Do: Deep condition 2-3x this week, use protein treatments, avoid heat styling, sleep in braids (minimize friction), assess hair strength.
Why: Stronger natural hair holds bonds better and handles tension better.
PART FOUR: WEEK 3 - STABILIZE & ASSESS
Week 3 Focus: Stabilize improvement.
What to Do: Continue deep conditioning, trim split ends (1/4 inch), final assessment of hair health, note your natural texture and density, finalize extension choices with stylist.
Why: Trimming removes fragile ends before installation. Assessment ensures you chose the right extensions.
PART FIVE: WEEK 4 - PREPARE & PLAN
Week 4 Focus: Get ready for installation.
What to Do: Final deep condition (2-3x this week), minimal styling (don't stress hair before installation), wash hair 1-2 days before installation (clean but not stripped), get good sleep (stress-free is important), show up to appointment hydrated and rested.
Why: Calm, hydrated hair plus rested body equals perfect installation environment.
PART SIX: WHAT NOT TO DO (Pre-Installation)
Don't: Get heavy color treatment (wait until after), chemically straighten/perm (wait until after), use clarifying shampoo constantly (strip too much), skip conditioning (hair needs moisture), install immediately if you see damage (wait, let hair heal), get cut dramatically (minimal trims only). These all compromise your result.
The 4 weeks before installation determine the next 6 months of hair success.
PART SEVEN: Pre-Installation Checklist
Week 1 Clarify and deep condition. Week 2 Strengthen with protein. Week 3 Trim and assess. Week 4 Final conditioning. Day Before Wash hair gently. Installation Day Show up ready.
BOTTOM LINE
4 weeks of prep creates a perfect canvas for installation. Your stylist can only work with what you bring. Bring healthy, strong, clean hair. Do this and your installation results will exceed expectations.
