Bond extensions are one of the most natural-looking, long-lasting, and versatile extension methods available. They go where wefts can't. They blend like nothing else. And when they're done right — with the right hair, the right stylist, and the right preparation — they are completely undetectable.

But they are also one of the most misunderstood methods. Walk into a bond appointment without knowing what you're doing and you'll either overspend on hair you don't need, choose the wrong tip type for your lifestyle, or end up with processed hair that starts failing at your root within weeks.

This guide is everything we know about bonds — distilled into one complete, honest resource. Read it before your appointment. Walk in knowing exactly what you want. And leave with exactly what you came for.

Chapter 01

What Are Bond Extensions?

Bond extensions — also called fusion extensions or strand-by-strand extensions — are individual bundles of hair (typically 25 strands) with a pre-formed tip at the top. Each strand is attached individually to a small section of natural hair, either by clamping a bead around the tip or by melting the keratin tip with a heat tool and fusing it directly to the hair.

Because each strand is attached independently right at the root, bond extensions have unmatched natural movement. There are no rows, no tracks, no wefts — just individual strands that flow and behave exactly like natural hair. They lie completely flat against the scalp and can be worn in any style, including high ponytails, braids, and updos.

The bond advantage: Individual strand attachment means natural movement, seamless blend, and no visible tracks. When installed correctly with quality hair, bond extensions are virtually undetectable — even in updos and ponytails.

Chapter 02

The Four Tip Types

We carry four tip types at Blonc — each suited for different installation methods and hair types. Here's the quick breakdown:

I-Tip

Bead Method

Straight cylindrical tip. Inserted into a micro bead and clamped — no heat required for standard install. Can also be melted for stronger hold. Most versatile tip type. Works for most hair types and most clients.

K-Tip

Flat / Fusion

Flat keratin tip — also called a flat tip. Melted with a heat tool and pressed around natural hair. Very low profile, sits close to the scalp. Ideal for clients who wear their hair up. Can use pre-loaded keratin or your own.

U-Tip

Nail Tip

Horseshoe-shaped tip. Melted and wrapped around natural hair for a strong, wrap-around hold. Many stylists prefer the U-shape for ease of application. Good for medium to thick natural hair.

V-Tip

Feather Tip

Pointed, feathered tip. Melts thin and flat — the most discreet tip available. Sits exceptionally close to the root. Best for fine hair where a bulkier bond would be visible.

Chapter 03

How Keratin Works

Keratin is a naturally occurring protein — the same one that makes up your hair, skin, and nails. As a bonding agent it is ideal because it melts at a specific temperature, bonds securely as it cools, and releases cleanly with a bond remover solution without damaging the natural hair shaft.

Our bond extensions come pre-loaded with keratin. Your stylist can use the keratin already on the tip, or they can apply their own preferred keratin for the install — whichever works best for their method. Confirm with your stylist before your appointment so they can prepare accordingly.

One critical rule: keep oil-based products away from the bond area at all times. Oils — including argan oil, coconut oil, and silicone serums — break down keratin. Applying them near the bond will shorten your install's lifespan significantly.

Chapter 04

Raw vs. Virgin Bond Hair: Why It Matters More in Bonds

In a bond format, hair quality matters more than in any other extension method. Because each strand is attached individually right at your root, any problem with the hair — tangling, matting, cuticle degradation — happens directly at the scalp. There is nowhere for it to hide.

Raw Single-Donor Bonds

Cuticle intact & aligned

Keratin bonds to natural cuticle

Improves with every wash

Can be reused multiple cycles

No defined lifespan

Virgin Multi-Donor Bonds

Cuticle stripped, silicone coated

Keratin bonds to silicone surface

Degrades as silicone washes out

One install cycle only

6–12 week quality lifespan

We mostly stock raw single-donor bonds — and we recommend them strongly for anyone installing at 18 inches or longer. At shorter lengths, virgin bonds can work well for one cycle. But if you want reusable hair that gets better over time and holds the bond more securely, raw is always the right answer.

Chapter 05

Choosing Your Length: 14" to 32"

We carry bond extensions from 14 to 32 inches — a range that goes far beyond most weft collections. Here's where each length lands on average-height clients (5'4"–5'6"):

14"–16"
Mid to below shoulder blade
18"–20"
Bra strap to below bra strap
22"–24"
Lower back to hip length
26"–28"
Below hip to upper thigh
32"
Mid thigh — maximum length

Always size up when in doubt. Always go raw at 20 inches and above. Curly textures — size up 2"–4" to account for shrinkage.

Chapter 06

How Many Bonds Do You Need?

Strand count depends on your natural hair density, the look you want, and the length you're choosing. Here are general guidelines — always confirm the exact count with your stylist at your appointment:

Goal
Bonds Needed
Volume only, subtle enhancement
50–75 bonds
Half head — noticeable change
75–100 bonds
Full head — dramatic transformation
100–150 bonds
Ultra full at long lengths
150–200+ bonds

Chapter 07

How to Care for Your Bond Extensions

Bond extensions reward good habits. Follow these rules and your install will look beautiful and last the full cycle. Break them and you'll be back in the salon chair earlier than planned.

WASH

Sulfate-free shampoo only. Wash in a downward motion. Never scrub in circles near the bonds — circular motion loosens them over time.

CONDITION

Mid-shaft to ends only. Never apply conditioner directly on the bonds. Avoid oil-based or silicone-heavy conditioners near the root — they break down keratin.

DRY

Never sleep on wet bonds — this causes root matting faster than anything else. Blow dry on low-medium heat, directing airflow downward.

OILS

Keep all oil-based products — argan oil, coconut oil, serums — well below the bond area. Oils degrade keratin. Apply only from mid-shaft down.

DETANGLE

Use a loop brush or wide-tooth comb. Always work from ends to roots. Hold above the bond while detangling to protect both the bond and your natural hair.

SLEEP

Loose braid or twist before bed. Silk or satin pillowcase or bonnet. This single habit extends your install life significantly — never skip it.

Chapter 08

Removal & Reinstall

Bond removal must always be done by a professional. A bond remover solution breaks down the keratin without damaging the natural hair shaft. Once the solution penetrates the bond, the extension slides out cleanly and remaining keratin is combed away gently. Attempting DIY removal causes breakage.

Your natural hair grows approximately half an inch per month. As it grows, bonds move further from the scalp — a move-up appointment every 8 to 12 weeks keeps them sitting naturally at the root. This is not a removal and reinstall — it's a maintenance appointment where existing bonds are taken down and reapplied closer to the root.

With raw single-donor hair, the extension strands themselves can often be reused for multiple move-up cycles. The hair has no expiration date. New keratin is applied to the same strands and they go right back in — saving you significant cost over time.

"With raw bonds, you pay for the move-up. Not the hair. The same strands go back in — cycle after cycle."

Chapter 09
