Understanding Your Hair's pH Balance
Most people don't know their hair has a pH. But understanding it changes how you care for extensions.
WHAT IS pH?
pH measures acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0-14. 7 is neutral. Below 7 is acidic. Above 7 is alkaline. Your hair's natural pH 4.5-5.5 (slightly acidic). This acidic pH keeps the cuticle closed and protected.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
When pH is balanced (4.5-5.5): Cuticles lay flat, hair is shiny, hair is strong, color lasts longer, extensions blend better.
When pH is imbalanced (too alkaline): Cuticles lift/open, hair becomes dull, hair becomes weak, color fades fast, extensions tangle more.
PRODUCTS THAT AFFECT pH
Acidic Products (Good for Extensions): Vinegar rinses, apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinses, color-safe shampoos, leave-in conditioners, acidic styling products.
Alkaline Products (Bad for Extensions): Sulfate shampoos (strip cuticle), clarifying shampoos (too alkaline), soap (very alkaline), hard water (alkaline minerals).
The right pH keeps your cuticle closed. Closed cuticles equal healthy hair.
HOW TO MAINTAIN pH BALANCE
Step 1: Use sulfate-free, pH-balanced shampoo (keeps cuticle closed). Step 2: Condition after every wash (closes cuticle further). Step 3: Do ACV rinses monthly (restores acidic pH). Step 4: Avoid alkaline products. Step 5: Deep condition weekly (maintains moisture and pH).
THE ACV RINSE
How to Do It: Mix 1 tablespoon ACV with 1 cup water. Pour over hair after conditioning. Leave for 1-2 minutes. Rinse with cool water. Why: ACV rinses restore acidic pH, seal cuticles, add shine, reduce frizz. Do monthly for best results.
BOTTOM LINE
pH balance is the foundation of healthy extensions. Keep your pH between 4.5-5.5 and your extensions will thrive.
