The 4-6 Month Sew-In: How Expert Stylists Charge $2,000 and Up

There is a big gap in sew-in pricing. On one end, beginners are charging anywhere from $175 to $275 for a sew-in. On the other end, expert-level stylists like me start at $2,000, which works out to roughly $500 per hour. Same basic category of service. Completely different result, and a completely different price.

The traditional 4 to 6 month sew-in is one of the top five highest revenue hair extension methods, and it is one I have been perfecting for most of my 21 years behind the chair. In this guide, I will explain what makes this sew-in different, why it lasts so long, and what separates a $200 sew-in from a $2,000 one.

PART ONE: What the 4-6 Month Sew-In Is

The name tells you exactly what it does: it lasts four to six months. Most sew-ins are built to be worn for six to eight weeks. This one is built for the long haul.

To get that kind of wear, everything has to be done with intention:

  • The foundation has to be secure without putting stress on the natural hair or scalp.
  • The wefts have to be sewn flat and tight enough to hold for months, but not so tight that they cause tension.
  • The hair has to be high enough quality to survive months of washing, styling, and sleeping without matting or thinning out.
  • The layout has to allow the client to wash, dry, and care for her scalp the entire time.

Anyone can sew a weft to a braid. Building an install that stays comfortable, flat, clean, and natural for half a year is a completely different skill.

PART TWO: Why Expert Pricing Is So Much Higher

It is priced by time and complexity

At my level, I think about this service at about $500 an hour, with a $2,000 starting point. The final price depends on:

  • How much natural hair the client has. More natural hair means more braiding or foundation work and more time.
  • How big her head is. A larger head needs more rows and more hair.
  • How much hair we are sewing on. Extra length and density take more wefts and more sewing.

It can get really time consuming. This is not a service you rush.

Longevity changes the value

A client paying $200 every six weeks for a sew-in that does not hold up spends more over a year, and gets a worse result, than a client who pays for a properly built install that lasts four to six months. When you explain that math, clients understand the price.

"Clients are not paying for the hours. They are paying for months of hair that still looks good in month five."

Mesh integration add-ons

For years, experienced stylists have added mesh or meshless integration to the 4-6 month sew-in. That means sewing in lace pieces or custom pieces to cover thinning areas. It is an upgrade that adds value and custom work to the install. Read more in Mesh and Meshless Integration: The Custom Service for Thinning Hair.

PART THREE: Moving From Beginner to Expert Pricing

Master the foundation

Everything depends on the foundation. Clean parts, consistent tension, and a layout that protects the natural hair and scalp.

Sew flat and secure

Your wefts should lay flat with no bumps, gaps, or visible thread. Security without bulk is the goal.

Use hair that lasts

You cannot build a 4 to 6 month install with hair that tangles in three weeks. Quality raw or virgin hair with aligned cuticles holds up through months of wear.

Educate your client

Aftercare is everything with a long-wear install. Teach clients how to wash, dry, and protect their install at night. Their results are your reputation.

Raise your prices in steps

As your installs hold up longer and look better, raise your prices. Your returning clients and your photos at month four and month five are your proof.
