Bundle Care 101: How to Wash, Condition, and Style Your Bundles
Bundles don't take care of themselves — and the biggest difference between hair that lasts a year and hair that's matted in a month usually comes down to a handful of daily habits. After 21 years of teaching clients how to care for their extensions, here's the routine I actually recommend.
PART ONE: Washing Bundles the Right Way
- Always detangle gently before washing, working from ends to roots
- Use sulfate-free shampoo and apply it primarily at the scalp/weft area, letting suds rinse through the lengths
- Avoid scrubbing or piling hair on top of your head while washing — this is a major cause of tangling
- Wash every 1-2 weeks for sew-ins; over-washing strips moisture, under-washing causes buildup
PART TWO: Conditioning and Drying
Apply conditioner from mid-shaft to ends, avoiding the weft itself to prevent loosening over time. Use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle while conditioner is in. When drying, pat with a microfiber towel rather than rubbing, and air dry or blow dry on low heat with a heat protectant.
PART THREE: Daily and Nightly Habits
| Habit | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Brush 1-2x daily, ends first | Prevents tangling and reduces shedding |
| Sleep in a silk or satin bonnet/pillowcase | Reduces friction that causes matting |
| Use heat protectant before styling | Prevents dryness and texture breakdown |
| Avoid heavy oils at the root/weft | Prevents buildup that weakens the weft seal |
"Bundle care isn't complicated, but it does require consistency. The clients with the longest-lasting hair are the ones with the simplest, most repeatable routines."
BOTTOM LINE
Quality hair still needs a real care routine. Wash gently, condition strategically, protect it at night, and you'll get significantly more life out of every bundle you buy.
