Bundle Maintenance Routine: A Week-by-Week Guide
Bundles don't take care of themselves after install day — they need an ongoing rhythm. After 21 years guiding clients through long-term wear, here's the week-by-week maintenance routine I actually recommend.
PART ONE: Week One — Settling In
Avoid heavy washing in the first few days as the install settles. Sleep with a silk bonnet or pillowcase from day one, and brush gently, ends first, daily to prevent early tangling.
PART TWO: Weeks Two Through Four — Steady Maintenance
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| Week 2 | First gentle wash and deep condition; check weft tension |
| Week 3 | Maintain washing rhythm every 1-2 weeks; moisturize ends |
| Week 4 | Evaluate for any new growth tightness at braid foundation |
PART THREE: Weeks Five and Beyond — Planning the Next Step
By the five to eight week mark, most installs need either a move-up (re-tightening the braid foundation as natural hair grows) or a full removal and reinstall. Waiting too long past this window increases the risk of matting and excess tension on natural hair.
"The clients who get the longest life out of their bundles are the ones who stick to a predictable maintenance rhythm instead of waiting until something feels wrong."
BOTTOM LINE
A simple week-by-week rhythm — gentle settling in, steady washing and conditioning, and a planned move-up or reinstall — keeps bundles looking their best for the entire time they're worn.
