Bundle Weight Explained: Why 100g Isn't Always 100g
Bundle weight is printed right on the label — 100 grams, sometimes 95 or 105 — and most buyers assume that number tells the whole story. After 21 years of weighing, installing, and yes, occasionally returning bundles myself, I can tell you that weight alone doesn't guarantee fullness. Here's what's actually going on.
PART ONE: Why 100 Grams Isn't a Fixed Amount of Fullness
A 100-gram bundle at 14 inches and a 100-gram bundle at 26 inches contain roughly the same weight of hair, but the longer bundle has to stretch that hair over a much larger surface area. The result: shorter bundles look fuller per gram, and longer bundles need more grams (more bundles) to achieve the same visual density.
This is the math suppliers rarely explain, and it's why two people can buy "3 bundles, 100g each" and walk away with completely different-looking results depending on length.
PART TWO: How Suppliers Can Manipulate Weight
Not every 100-gram bundle is honest. Some manufacturers add weight through:
- Excess wefting material — thicker, heavier weft tape or thread that adds grams without adding visible hair
- Blended fillers — lower-grade or synthetic strands mixed in to bulk up weight cheaply
- Moisture retention — hair that hasn't been fully dried can weigh more on the scale and lose grams (and apparent fullness) once it dries out
"I've weighed bundles fresh out of the package that lost nearly 10 grams after their first wash. That's not shrinkage — that's moisture being counted as hair."
PART THREE: What to Actually Look For Instead of Trusting the Label
| Check | What It Tells You |
|---|---|
| Weft thickness | Thin, neat wefts mean less filler weight |
| Strand-to-weft ratio | Visually dense hair per inch of weft, not just total weight |
| Post-wash weight | Quality hair loses minimal weight after the first wash |
| Supplier transparency | Reputable sellers explain weight-to-length tradeoffs upfront |
BOTTOM LINE
The number on the label is a starting point, not a guarantee. Understanding how length affects apparent fullness — and knowing the signs of padded weight — will save you from buying bundles that look thinner in person than they did online.
