I-Tip bead weight sizes 0.5g 0.7g 0.8g comparison BLONC

Choosing the Right I-Tip Bead Weight: 0.5g, 0.7g, or 0.8g

Most I-tip clients have never thought about bead weight before their first consultation, but after 21+ years behind the chair, I consider it one of the most important technical decisions in the entire install. Here's what those numbers actually mean.

PART ONE: What Bead Weight Refers To

Bead weight describes the size of the bead (and often the corresponding I-tip strand) used to clamp hair together — common options are 0.5g, 0.7g, and 0.8g. The lighter the weight, the smaller and less noticeable the bead sits against the scalp.

PART TWO: Matching Weight to Hair Type

Fine or thin natural hair generally does best with the lighter 0.5g bead — smaller, less weight, less tension, and far more discreet against delicate strands. Medium to thicker natural hair can often support a 0.7g or 0.8g bead comfortably, allowing for slightly fuller sections and potentially fewer total beads needed for the same volume.

"I'd rather use more of the smaller 0.5g beads on a fine-haired client than fewer heavier beads that show through their hair. The bead should disappear into the hair, not announce itself."

PART THREE: Why This Decision Shouldn't Be Skipped

Using too heavy a bead on fine hair is one of the most common causes of visible extensions and unnecessary tension at the root. A proper consultation should always include a bead weight discussion based on your actual natural hair density — not a one-size-fits-all default.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Ask your stylist about bead weight before your I-tip install — 0.5g for the most discreet result on fine hair, 0.7g-0.8g for denser hair that can support it. We carry raw I-tip hair from 14 to 32 inches in a range of natural and blonde shades.
