How to Choose the Right Texture and Shade for a Lace Piece

A lace piece can be beautifully installed and still look wrong if the texture or shade is off. Our lace pieces come in multiple shades and multiple textures, which means you can match almost any client. The key is knowing how to choose.

In this guide, I will walk through how to choose texture and shade for a lace piece in a mesh install.

PART ONE: Choosing Texture

Match the hair it will sit next to

If the lace is integrated into the client's natural hair, match her natural texture. If it is part of a sew-in or hybrid, match the wefts.

Look at the texture at the root

The hair closest to the lace is what people see at the part. Match the root texture, not just the ends.

Consider how she styles

If she wears her hair straightened most days, a slightly smoother texture may work. If she wears it natural, match her natural pattern closely.

Common textures

  • Straight
  • Wavy
  • Curly
  • Kinky straight
  • Afro kinky curly

PART TWO: Choosing Shade

Match the roots

The part is where color matters most. Match the lace hair to her roots.

Then match the ends

The lace hair should blend into the lengths around it.

Custom color when needed

If no stock shade is exact, every lace piece can be custom colored, including root shadows and dimension.

"Match the root first. That is where everyone looks."

PART THREE: Matching Lace to Skin

Beyond the hair, the lace itself should blend with the client's scalp and skin tone. Customizing or tinting the lace helps it disappear, especially at the part and hairline.

SIDE BY SIDE: Matching Checklist

Element Match To
Texture Natural hair or wefts, especially at the root
Root color Client's roots
Length color Surrounding hair
Lace tone Scalp and skin

What to Expect

Step Result
Texture match The part and blend look natural
Shade match No visible color line
Lace match Lace looks like scalp

BOTTOM LINE

Choose texture by matching the hair the lace will sit next to, especially at the root, and choose shade by matching the roots first and the lengths second. Custom color and lace tinting finish the match.
