The Salon Pricing Question - What Should You Pay?
Extension installation pricing is confusing. Everyone charges differently. Here's what's fair.
PART ONE: INSTALLATION COST BREAKDOWN
K-Tip Installation: Professional stylist time 4-6 hours, expertise required very high skill level, average cost $300-800 (installation only), hair purchased separately $200-600. Total K-Tip Investment: $500-1400.
Tape-In Installation: Professional stylist time 1-2 hours, expertise required moderate skill level, average cost $150-400 (installation only), hair purchased separately $200-400. Total Tape-In Investment: $350-800.
Sew-In Installation: Professional stylist time 3-5 hours, expertise required moderate-high skill level, average cost $150-500 (installation only), hair purchased separately $150-300. Total Sew-In Investment: $300-800.
PART TWO: WHAT AFFECTS INSTALLATION COST
Cost Factors: Your stylist's experience level (more experienced equals higher cost), salon location (NYC LA equals higher rural equals lower), hair type you're bringing (more difficult equals higher cost), installation method (K-tips most expensive), your natural hair condition (damage equals more time equals higher cost), customization level (more custom equals higher cost). All of these are legitimate reasons for price variation.
PART THREE: IS IT WORTH THE COST?
The question isn't Is it expensive? The question is: Will this stylist do a good job?
Cheap installation ($200 total) from inexperienced stylist equals potential damage, poor results, regret. Expensive installation ($800 total) from expert equals perfect placement, natural look, confidence, longevity. You're not paying for hair. You're paying for expertise.
PART FOUR: RED FLAGS (Pricing Too Low)
If installation costs less than $200 total (hair plus install): Stylist may lack experience, hair quality likely compromised, installation may be rushed, results likely disappointing, damage risk higher. Good installation takes time and skill. It costs money.
PART FIVE: RED FLAGS (Pricing Too High)
If installation costs more than $1200 (for non-celebrity clients): May be overcharging for same service, may be using prestige pricing, may not be worth the premium, verify stylist credentials. Expensive doesn't always mean better.
PART SIX: Fair Pricing Ranges by Market
Rural Areas: K-tips $300-600 total, tape-ins $200-400 total, sew-ins $200-500 total.
Mid-Size Cities: K-tips $400-800 total, tape-ins $250-500 total, sew-ins $300-600 total.
Major Cities (NYC LA etc): K-tips $600-1200+ total, tape-ins $400-800 total, sew-ins $500-1000 total. Geographic variation is normal.
Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.
PART SEVEN: Maintenance Cost
After installation: Maintenance appointments every 6-8 weeks, cost $100-300 per appointment. This ongoing cost is part of the investment.
BOTTOM LINE
Fair pricing exists. It varies by location, stylist experience, and method. Get quotes from multiple stylists. Choose based on experience and reviews, not just price. Investing in quality installation saves money long-term through better results and longevity.
