After 21 years fitting people into wigs, I've seen every installation method work and fail. Here's exactly how to install a front lace wig so it stays secure all day and comes off easily when you're ready.

PART ONE: PREPARATION BASICS

What You Need

  • Front lace wig
  • Wig cap (optional but recommended)
  • Edge control or anti-slip gel
  • Wig glue (lace-safe adhesive)
  • Tweezers for adjustments
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Protective barrier (liquid latex or barrier spray)

Preparation Steps

Step 1: Wash and brush your natural hair. Lay edges down smoothly. If you have a lot of hair, consider putting it in a wig cap first.

Step 2: Apply protective barrier to your hairline. This prevents glue from bonding directly to your skin and hair. Use liquid latex or a commercial barrier spray. Let dry (30 seconds to 2 minutes).

Step 3: Apply edge control along your hairline. This helps the glue bond better and keeps your hairline smooth.

PART TWO: INSTALLATION PROCESS

The 5-Minute Installation

Step 1: Position the wig Start from the center front and work out toward the temples and sides. Position the hairline approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch above your natural hairline. The wig shouldn't be pulled tight—it should sit naturally.

Step 2: Apply glue to hairline Using a glue applicator bottle, apply a thin, even line of glue to your hairline where the wig will sit. Don't apply glue to the lace itself—apply it to your skin.

Step 3: Lower the lace Slowly lower the front lace edge onto the glued area, starting from center and working outward. Press gently as you go.

Step 4: Press and hold Once fully positioned, press your finger along the entire hairline for 30-60 seconds. This creates an even bond.

Step 5: Wait to cure Allow 1-2 hours for the glue to fully cure before washing, styling, or sleeping. Most lace glues set in 30 minutes, but full cure takes longer.

PART THREE: ALTERNATIVE INSTALLATION METHODS

Method 1: Glueless with Combs and Straps

For: People with sensitive skin or who want to remove the wig daily.

How it works: The wig has comb teeth sewn into the inside front edge that grip your hair. Adjustable straps in back keep it secure. No glue needed.

Installation: 1. Put wig on like a hat 2. Position front hairline 3. Secure combs by pressing them into your hair 4. Adjust back straps until snug 5. Done

Advantage: No glue, easy removal, no prep needed.

Disadvantage: Not as secure for very active people. Slight movement possible with vigorous activity.

Method 2: Wig Glue + Combs (Hybrid)

For: Maximum security with removability option.

How it works: Glue the front lace down PLUS use the combs and back straps for extra security.

Installation: Follow standard glue installation above, but also use the internal combs and back straps for backup security.

Advantage: Extremely secure. Very stable all day.

Disadvantage: More components to manage. Slightly more complex installation.

Method 3: Glue Dots or Adhesive Strips

For: Quick installations when you're in a hurry.

How it works: Pre-made adhesive dots or strips that stick to your hairline. Press the wig lace onto the dots.

Advantage: Fast, no measuring, mess-free.

Disadvantage: More expensive than liquid glue. Less precise control. Harder to adjust position once applied.

PART FOUR: SECURING & STYLING

After Installation

Check the fit: Once glue is set, move your head around. Pull gently on the lace to confirm it's secure. The wig shouldn't shift.

Style the hairline: Use edge control on baby hairs. Create a natural hairline with slight variation (not a perfectly straight line).

Blend with natural hair: If you have natural hair showing at sides or temples, blend it seamlessly with the wig.

BOTTOM LINE: INSTALLATION IS SIMPLE

Front lace installation is genuinely straightforward. You're applying glue in one area and waiting for it to cure. The only real skill is positioning it straight and blending the hairline naturally.

Practice makes perfect. Your first installation might take 15-20 minutes. By your third installation, you'll do it in 5-10 minutes.
