Not Everyone Is a Candidate: How to Match Clients to the Right Extension Method

Here is something that does not get said enough in extension classes: not everybody is a candidate for every method. Bonds are the highest revenue hair extension method out there, but I have turned away bond clients because their hair could not support them. Saying no to the wrong method protects the client, protects your reputation, and in the long run, protects your income.

The consultation is where you match the client to the right service. In this guide, I will walk through how I decide which of the top five highest revenue methods fits each client: bonds, invisible bead sewn-in single rows, mesh and meshless integration, tape-ins, or the 4 to 6 month sew-in.

PART ONE: Why the Consultation Decides Everything

A beautiful install on the wrong client is still a failed install. If the method puts too much stress on her natural hair, she may end up with breakage or thinning. If it does not fit her lifestyle, she will not maintain it. Either way, she will not come back, and she will tell people.

A great consultation does three things:

  • Protects the client's natural hair
  • Sets clear expectations about cost, time, and maintenance
  • Matches her to the method that gives her the best result

"The most profitable thing you can do in a consultation is tell a client the truth, even when the truth is a different method than the one she came in for."

PART TWO: What to Evaluate

1. Natural hair density

Does she have enough hair to hide the attachment points? Bonds and tape-ins need enough natural hair to cover them. Very thin areas may do better with mesh or meshless integration.

2. Hair strength and condition

Is the hair healthy, or is it over-processed, fragile, or breaking? Fragile hair may not handle the weight or tension of certain methods.

3. Texture

What is her natural texture, and can you match it? Methods like bonds allow a lot of texture customization, but you need access to the right hair to do it.

4. Where she is thinning, if anywhere

Thinning in specific areas, like the crown or part, often points to integration rather than a full head of extensions.

5. Lifestyle

Does she work out every day? Swim? Wear her hair up? How often can she come in for maintenance? Her lifestyle decides which method she can realistically keep up with.

6. Budget, including maintenance

Talk through the full cost, install plus ongoing maintenance, before she commits. A client who understands the whole cost is a client who stays.

PART THREE: Matching Clients to Methods

Keratin bonds

Good fit: Healthy hair with enough density, a client who wants the most natural look and feel, wants to wear her hair up, and will commit to home care and maintenance.
Use caution: Very fine or fragile hair, or a client unwilling to follow aftercare.

Invisible bead sewn-in single rows

Good fit: Clients who want length and fullness with no glue and no heat, and who can come in for maintenance. An install lasts about six good months.
Use caution: Hair that is too thin to hide the rows.

Mesh and meshless integration

Good fit: Clients thinning in specific areas who do not need extensions all over.
Use caution: Sudden or unexplained hair loss. Recommend she check in with a doctor or dermatologist as well.

Tape-ins

Good fit: Clients who want a flat, lightweight option and a quicker install, often including many clients with finer hair.
Use caution: Clients who use a lot of oil-based products near the scalp, which can weaken tape.

4-6 month sew-in

Good fit: Clients who want long wear and a full transformation, and who will follow scalp and aftercare instructions.
Use caution: Scalp sensitivity or tension issues.

Hybrid installs

Sometimes the answer is a combination. Bonds in the most visible areas and a different method underneath can give a client the benefits of bonds even if her whole head is not a candidate.
