The Hair Growth Cycle & How Extensions Support It
Your hair has a natural growth cycle. Extensions work best when you understand and support this cycle.
PART ONE: THE THREE PHASES (Detailed)
Anagen Phase (Growth): Duration 2-7 years, what's happening hair actively grows 0.3-0.4mm per day, hair percentage 85-90% of your scalp hair, hormones involved estrogen growth factors.
Catagen Phase (Transition): Duration 2-3 weeks, what's happening hair stops growing detaches from follicle, hair percentage 1% of your hair, action hair moves toward shedding.
Telogen Phase (Shedding): Duration 2-3 months, what's happening hair rests then sheds naturally, hair percentage 10-15% of your hair, result natural daily shedding (50-100 hairs normal). Then the cycle repeats for each individual hair.
PART TWO: YOUR NATURAL SHEDDING
Important: You naturally shed 50-100 hairs daily. This is normal. With extensions: You still shed 50-100 hairs daily. That shedding gets caught in extensions. Buildup can occur if not managed. Regular washing removes shed hair. This is why regular washing is essential (not optional).
PART THREE: HOW EXTENSIONS AFFECT THE CYCLE
Extensions add weight: More weight on roots equals potential tension on follicles, excessive weight/excessive tension equals potential hair loss, moderate weight/proper tension equals no impact on cycle. The key: Proper installation and appropriate weight.
Extensions restrict movement: Braided/tight installation equals tension, K-tips equals distributed tension, clip-ins equals zero tension, tape-ins equals minimal tension. Different installations equal different tension levels.
PART FOUR: SUPPORTING NATURAL GROWTH WITH EXTENSIONS
To support your growth cycle: Use appropriate weight (don't go overboard with volume), maintain proper tension (not too tight), keep scalp healthy (massage daily use scalp oil), moisturize root area (extensions dry scalp), take periodic breaks (let hair fully recover), maintain healthy diet (supports hair growth).
PART FIVE: Growth Rate Expectations
Typical hair growth: 0.3-0.4mm per day, 3.6-4.8mm per month, 4-6 inches per year. Your natural hair grows at this rate whether you have extensions or not. If extensions prevent access to root area (tight installation), growth may be slower. But growth continues.
Extensions don't stop growth. Proper extensions support growth.
BOTTOM LINE
Understanding your growth cycle helps you make better extension decisions. Respect the cycle. Support it with proper care. Your natural hair will thrive.
