How Long Do I-Tips Last Between Maintenance Visits

After 21+ years behind the chair, one of the first questions I answer for new I-tip clients is how long they can expect to go before needing a maintenance appointment. Here's the honest, realistic timeline.

PART ONE: The Typical Window

Most I-tip clients need a maintenance visit around 8-10 weeks after install, slightly shorter than the typical K-tip window, since beads can begin to sit further from the scalp as hair grows and become more noticeable a bit sooner than a flush keratin bond.

PART TWO: What Maintenance Actually Involves

An I-tip maintenance visit typically means moving beads back up closer to the scalp — reopening, repositioning, and reclamping — rather than a full re-tipping process. This can often be done without needing entirely new hair, provided your existing strands are still in good shape.

"I-tip maintenance is usually quicker than K-tip re-tipping since there's no heat cool-down time involved. It's mechanical work — open the bead, move it up, close it again."

PART THREE: What Affects Your Personal Timeline

Hair growth rate, how well you're following aftercare (particularly avoiding excess tension from tight styles), and bead weight all affect how quickly you'll need your next visit. Clients using the correctly sized bead for their hair type tend to go the full recommended window comfortably.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Plan on an I-tip maintenance visit roughly every 8-10 weeks, with quicker, more mechanical upkeep than heat-based methods. We carry raw I-tip hair from 14 to 32 inches in a range of natural and blonde shades.
