How Much Hair Do You Actually Need? (The Math)

Here's a question I get asked constantly: "How much hair do I need?" It's a great question. Because the answer depends on several factors, and if you get it wrong, you either waste money or you don't have enough coverage. After 21 years, I can give you the exact framework to figure this out for your specific hair. PART ONE: The Variables How much hair you need depends on: 1. Your natural hair density (how thick your hair is) 2. Your natural hair length and weight 3. The length of extensions you want 4. The texture (heavier textures need less bulk) 5. Your installation method (tape-ins, K-tips, sew-ins all differ) 6. Your desired fullness level PART TWO: The Baseline Most clients need 100-150 grams for full, beautiful coverage. This means: - Light coverage/blend: 50-100g - Medium coverage: 100-150g - Heavy/maximum coverage: 150-200g If you have very fine, thin natural hair, you might need only 75-100g. If you have thick, dense natural hair, you might need 150-200g. PART THREE: How to Calculate Your Specific Amount Start with density: Fine hair: 0.75-1.0 oz per inch of length Medium hair: 1.0-1.5 oz per inch Thick hair: 1.5-2.0 oz per inch Example: If you're getting 20-inch extensions and you have thick, dense natural hair, you'd calculate: 20 inches × 1.75 oz average = 35 ounces ≈ 1000 grams That seems like a lot, but thick hair needs bulk. PART FOUR: Quick Reference Guide Short Extensions (10-14 inches): - Fine hair: 50-75g - Medium hair: 75-100g - Thick hair: 100-125g Medium Extensions (16-20 inches): - Fine hair: 75-100g - Medium hair: 100-150g - Thick hair: 150-200g Long Extensions (22-28 inches): - Fine hair: 100-150g - Medium hair: 150-200g - Thick hair: 200-250g Extra Long Extensions (30+ inches): - Fine hair: 150-200g - Medium hair: 200-300g - Thick hair: 250-350g BOTTOM LINE If you're between amounts, order more. You can always use extra hair later. You can't add more if you don't have it. When you order from BLONC, we can help you nail your exact amount based on your specific hair. Send us a photo or video of your natural hair and your desired look, and we'll calculate exactly what you need.
