How Often Should You Wash K-Tip Extensions
Wash frequency is one of the most common questions I get from K-tip clients, and it's also one of the most misunderstood. After 21+ years behind the chair, here's what I actually tell clients: with raw hair K-tips, you're not washing on a rigid schedule — you're washing based on scalp need, using the right products, and always cleaning up rather than lifting the cuticle.
PART ONE: Why Frequency Isn't the Real Issue
People fixate on "how many times a week" when the real variable is technique and product choice. Washing raw hair K-tips 2-3 times a week with a moisturizing, cuticle-safe shampoo and conditioner — we recommend Joico specifically for raw hair — causes far less damage than washing once a week with the wrong products that strip and lift the cuticle.
PART TWO: The Right Way to Wash K-Tips
Focus shampoo at the scalp and roots where oil actually builds up, let the suds rinse down through the lengths rather than scrubbing the extension hair directly, and always apply conditioner mid-length to ends — never at the bonds themselves, since conditioner buildup at the bond can cause slipping over time. Gently squeeze water out; never rub or twist the hair in a towel.
"I tell every raw hair client the same thing: it's not about washing less, it's about washing right. Sulfate-heavy, cuticle-stripping shampoos are the actual enemy, not water."
PART THREE: Signs You're Washing Wrong
If your K-tips are tangling near the bonds, feeling dry and straw-like, or losing their natural movement quickly after washing, the shampoo and conditioner are almost always the cause — not the frequency. Raw hair responds beautifully to consistent, gentle care with the right moisturizing products.
