Hair Extension Length:
A Complete Visual Guide
Choosing the wrong length is one of the most common — and most avoidable — hair extension mistakes. Here's everything you need to know before you buy.

Length is one of the first things people decide when shopping for extensions — and one of the most frequently gotten wrong. Too short and you don't get the look you wanted. Too long and the extensions don't blend naturally with your own hair. And because extension length is measured differently than you might expect, a lot of buyers end up confused even before they place an order.
This guide is going to clear all of that up. We'll walk you through how extension length is measured, where each length actually falls on your body, what factors affect where it lands, and how to choose the right length for your specific goal — whether that's adding inches, adding volume, or both.
Part One
How Extension Length Is Actually Measured
Hair extension length is measured from the top of the weft — or the bond, tape tab, or clip — straight down to the very tips of the hair. It is not measured from where the extension starts on your head. It is the length of the hair itself.
This means that where the extension lands on your body depends entirely on where it is installed. A 20" weft installed at the nape of your neck will fall much higher than a 20" weft installed at the top of your head. The reference points we give in this guide assume a standard installation position — which for most methods is roughly at or just above the occipital bone, the natural curve at the back of the head.
Always size up when in doubt. Extensions can always be trimmed shorter after installation. You cannot add inches back. If you're between two lengths, order the longer one and have your stylist trim to your desired length once installed.
Part Two
The Length Guide: Where Each Size Actually Falls
These are general guidelines based on an average height of 5'4"–5'6". If you are taller, lengths will fall slightly higher on your body. If you are shorter, they will fall slightly lower. Use these as a starting point, not an absolute guarantee.
Part Three
Factors That Affect Where Your Extensions Land
Length guides are a great starting point — but your body, your hair, and your installation method all play a role in where extensions actually land. Here are the key variables to factor in before you order:
If you are taller than 5'6", lengths will sit higher on your body than the reference guide suggests. If you are shorter than 5'4", they will sit lower. For very tall clients, consider sizing up one length to compensate.
Two people can be the same height but have very different torso lengths. A longer torso means extensions fall higher. A shorter torso means they fall lower. Your stylist can help account for this during consultation.
The placement of your extension rows affects where the hair falls. Higher installation = higher landing point. Lower installation = lower. This is especially important for tape-in and weft methods.
Curly and wavy extensions shrink significantly when dry. A 20" curly bundle may appear to sit at 14"–16" once it's in its natural curl pattern. Always factor in shrinkage when ordering curly textures — size up by at least 2".
Single drawn hair (which is standard for all raw hair) has a natural taper at the ends. For the thickest, most blunt bottom edge, order 2"–3" longer than your desired length and have your stylist trim and blend after installation.
Part Four
Choosing Length by Goal
Not sure where to start? Here's a quick guide based on what you're actually trying to achieve:
Important Note on Longer Lengths
Why Hair Quality Matters More as Length Increases
The longer the extension, the more the quality of the hair matters. A low-grade silicone-coated bundle might hold up reasonably well at 12" — but at 20" or 22", the weight of the hair combined with the degrading silicone coating creates a matting and tangling situation that becomes nearly impossible to manage within weeks.
At longer lengths, only raw cuticle-intact hair performs consistently. The cuticle is what keeps long hair tangle-free, manageable, and beautiful over time. Without it, longer lengths become a source of frustration rather than joy.
This is why we always recommend raw hair to clients who are purchasing 20" and above. The investment is higher upfront. But the experience — and the longevity — is incomparable.
"The longer you want to go, the more the quality of the hair matters. Don't shortcut the foundation of your look."
