How to Prep Natural Hair Before a Machine Weft Install
The install day itself gets a lot of attention, but proper prep beforehand is what actually determines how well a machine weft install turns out. After 21 years prepping clients for installation, here's my exact routine.
PART ONE: The Wash and Deep Condition
Start with a clarifying wash to remove any product buildup, followed by a deep conditioning treatment. Clean, moisturized hair braids more evenly and holds the foundation better than hair with residue or dryness.
PART TWO: Detangling and Trimming
- Fully detangle before braiding to prevent trapped knots under the foundation
- Trim split ends if needed — damaged ends under a weft foundation can worsen over the wear period
- Address any breakage concerns with your stylist before installing
PART THREE: Scalp and Braid Prep
