How to Sleep With K-Tip Extensions (Without Waking Up to a Mess)
"Why do my extensions look perfect when I go to bed and like a bird's nest when I wake up?" I hear this constantly, and after 21+ years behind the chair, the answer is almost always the nighttime routine — not the hair itself.
PART ONE: The Loose Braid Rule
Raw hair K-tips need to be contained overnight, and the simplest method is a single loose braid down the back, secured with a soft, seamless elastic. A braid keeps strands from rubbing against each other and against your pillowcase all night, which is the main cause of overnight tangling at the bonds.
PART TWO: Pillowcase Matters More Than You'd Think
Cotton pillowcases create friction that roughs up the hair cuticle overnight. A silk or satin pillowcase drastically reduces that friction, which matters even more with raw hair since one of raw hair's biggest advantages — its intact, smooth cuticle — is exactly what nighttime friction damages first.
"I always ask tangling clients two questions: what's your pillowcase made of, and are you braiding at night? Nine times out of ten, that's the whole answer."
PART THREE: What to Avoid
Never go to bed with wet K-tips — wet hair is more fragile and prone to tangling, and bonds need to be fully dry to maintain their hold. Avoid tight, high ponytails overnight too, since they put constant tension on bonds for hours at a time.
