How to Wash a Wig the Right Way

HOW TO WASH A WIG THE RIGHT WAY

Most people wash wigs wrong. They use too much heat, too much product, or aggressive rubbing. Here's how to wash your wig properly.

PART ONE: PREPARATION

What You Need

  • Sulfate-free shampoo (wig-specific or gentle)
  • Wig conditioner
  • Cool or lukewarm water
  • Wide-tooth comb
  • Towel (optional)
  • Wig head for drying

Pre-Wash Brushing

Gently brush the wig to remove any tangles before washing. This prevents tangles from worsening in water.

PART TWO: WASHING STEPS

Step 1: Fill Basin with Cool Water

Use a basin or sink with cool water. Add a squirt of sulfate-free shampoo.

Step 2: Soak the Wig

Submerge the wig gently. Let it soak for 3-5 minutes. Don't agitate or scrub.

Step 3: Gentle Agitation

Very gently move the water through the hair. Don't rub, twist, or wring. Just let soapy water move through.

Step 4: Rinse (First Time)

Drain the soapy water. Refill basin with clean water. Submerge and gently rinse. Repeat 2-3 times until water runs clear.

Step 5: Condition

Refill basin with cool water. Add generous amount of wig conditioner. Soak wig for 5-10 minutes.

Step 6: Rinse Conditioner Out

Drain conditioner. Rinse with clean water 2-3 times until water runs clear. Leave wig in final cool water rinse.

Step 7: Excess Water Removal

Gently squeeze excess water from the hair. Don't wring or twist. Just gently squeeze.

Step 8: Dry

Place wig on wig head. Allow to air dry completely. Don't use heat. This takes 4-8 hours or overnight.

PART THREE: IMPORTANT DON'Ts

DON'T: - Use hot water (damages hair) - Scrub or rub the hair - Wring or twist the wig - Use blow dryer - Use regular shampoo (too harsh) - Leave conditioner in for longer than 15 minutes - Wash more than 1-2 times per week

BOTTOM LINE

The secret to wig washing is gentle handling and cool water. Treat it like you're washing fine silk, because you are.
