I-Tip Aftercare: Washing and Styling Without Damaging the Bead
I-tip aftercare shares a lot with general raw hair care, but the bead itself introduces a few specific considerations. After 21+ years behind the chair, here's what I tell every I-tip client.
PART ONE: Washing Around the Bead
Wash your scalp and beads normally with a moisturizing, cuticle-safe shampoo — we recommend Joico for raw hair — without scrubbing directly at the beads themselves. Gently work shampoo through with your fingertips rather than aggressively massaging the bead area, which can cause the bead to rotate or shift on the strand over time.
PART TWO: Styling Considerations
Because I-tip beads are metal, avoid direct heat tool contact with the bead itself — similar to the bond-clearance rule with K-tips, but for a different reason: excessive heat on metal beads can actually get hot enough to be uncomfortable against the scalp.
"I-tip clients sometimes forget the bead is metal. A flat iron passed directly over it isn't just a styling risk, it can genuinely get too hot to touch. Keep tools a safe distance away."
PART THREE: Sleeping and Detangling
Loose braiding at night and gentle, root-up detangling apply here just as they do for any bonded extension method — the beads themselves are smooth enough not to cause extra tangling when hair is properly maintained.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Gentle washing, heat-tool awareness around the metal bead, and consistent nighttime care will keep your I-tips looking great between visits. We carry raw I-tip hair from 14 to 32 inches in a range of natural and blonde shades.
