I-Tips and Bead Spacing: Getting It Right

Just like bond spacing matters for K-tips, bead spacing is one of the most important technical decisions in an I-tip install. After 21+ years behind the chair, here's how I think about it.

PART ONE: Why Spacing Matters

Beads placed too close together don't give hair room to move naturally between them, increasing friction and tangling at the base. Beads placed too far apart can leave gaps in coverage and reduce overall volume.

PART TWO: Finding the Right Balance

A general rule is roughly a pencil's width of space between individual beads within a row, with enough vertical spacing between rows to keep sections from crowding as natural hair grows out. Denser natural hair can typically support slightly tighter spacing than fine hair.

"Tight spacing looks fuller on day one, but if it's too tight, that client is back in my chair with tangling within weeks. Correct spacing protects the install long-term."

PART THREE: How Bead Weight Affects Spacing

Heavier beads generally need slightly more spacing than lighter beads to avoid excess pull on any one section of natural hair, which is part of why bead weight and spacing decisions happen together at consultation.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Correct bead spacing prevents tangling while preserving volume — it's worth asking your stylist about before your I-tip install. We carry raw I-tip hair from 14 to 32 inches in a range of natural and blonde shades.
