I-Tips for Layered Haircuts: Blending Beads Into Your Style
Layered clients bring a genuine placement challenge to any bonded extension method, and after 21+ years behind the chair, I approach I-tips on layered hair with the same section-by-section care I use for K-tips.
PART ONE: Why Layers Complicate Bead Placement
Uniform bead placement across differently-lengthed layers creates visible inconsistency — shorter layers can expose beads that longer sections would hide. Extension length also needs to follow the existing layer structure rather than flatten it into one length.
PART TWO: A Section-By-Section Approach
We typically place slightly lighter, smaller beads in shorter layer sections and adjust extension length section by section, preserving the movement and shape of the original haircut rather than overwriting it with uniform length.
"Layered clients need customization, not a standard template. Every section gets its own bead weight and length decision based on what that specific layer needs to blend well."
PART THREE: Why Raw Hair's Movement Helps
Raw hair moves the way natural hair does, which is essential for blending convincingly into layers — processed hair with less natural movement tends to look separate from the surrounding layers rather than integrated.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Layered hair and I-tips work well together with a customized, section-by-section bead placement plan. We carry raw I-tip hair from 14 to 32 inches in a range of natural and blonde shades.
