I-Tips and Heat Styling: What You Need to Know About the Bead

Heat styling questions come up with every bonded extension method, but I-tips have a specific consideration the others don't: a metal bead that conducts heat differently than a keratin bond. After 21+ years behind the chair, here's what I tell clients.

PART ONE: The Hair Itself Handles Heat Normally

Raw I-tip hair styles at the same safe temperatures as your natural hair, generally in the 300-350°F range, since it's unprocessed and behaves like real hair under a flat iron or curling wand.

PART TWO: The Metal Bead Changes the Equation

Unlike a keratin bond, which softens under heat, a metal bead conducts and holds heat, meaning direct or prolonged tool contact can make it uncomfortably hot against the scalp — a genuinely different concern than bond softening.

"I tell I-tip clients specifically: don't just avoid the bead for hold reasons, avoid it because it can get hot enough to be uncomfortable. It's a different risk than what K-tip clients need to watch for."

PART THREE: Safe Styling Habits

Keep flat irons and curling tools at least an inch from any bead, always use heat protectant, and consider styling in sections that let you see and avoid bead locations as you work through the hair.

THE BOTTOM LINE

I-tip hair handles heat styling well within normal ranges — just keep tools clear of the metal beads themselves for comfort and safety. We carry raw I-tip hair from 14 to 32 inches in a range of natural and blonde shades.
