K-Tip Bond Spacing: How Far Apart Should They Be

Bond spacing rarely comes up in client conversations, but after 21+ years behind the chair, I consider it one of the most important technical decisions in a K-tip install — right up there with bond size and hair quality.

PART ONE: Why Spacing Matters

Bonds placed too close together don't give hair room to move naturally between them, which increases friction and tangling at the base. Bonds placed too far apart can leave gaps in coverage and reduce the overall volume the client is paying for.

PART TWO: Finding the Right Balance

A general rule is roughly a pencil's width of space between individual bonds within a row, and enough vertical spacing between rows to keep sections from crowding each other as natural hair grows out. Denser natural hair can typically support slightly tighter spacing than fine or thin hair.

"Tight spacing looks fuller on day one, but if it's too tight, that client is back in my chair with matting and tangling within weeks. Correct spacing protects the install long-term, not just on install day."

PART THREE: How Raw Hair Affects Spacing Decisions

Raw hair's natural, honest movement makes it easier to judge realistic spacing during application, since it behaves the way it will continue to behave for the life of the install — unlike processed hair, which can shift in texture over time and reveal spacing that seemed fine initially but wasn't.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Correct bond spacing prevents tangling while preserving volume — it's a detail worth asking your stylist about before your install. We carry raw Indian K-tip hair in natural, light ash blonde #18, and platinum blonde #613, up to 32 inches, single and double drawn.
