Glossary of raw Indian K-tip hair extension terminology

K-Tips 101: A Beginner's Glossary of Terms Worth Knowing

Walking into a K-tip consultation without knowing the vocabulary puts you at a real disadvantage — not because anyone's trying to confuse you, but because terms like "raw," "Remy," and "double drawn" get thrown around assuming you already know what they mean. Here's a plain-language glossary to change that.

K-Tip

A hair extension method where a keratin tip is fused to a small section of natural hair using heat, creating a small, discreet, individual bond.

Raw Hair

Hair cut directly from a single donor's head, with the cuticle kept fully intact and aligned root to tip, never chemically processed. The highest, purest grade of hair on the market.

Virgin Hair

Also unprocessed and chemical-free, but sourced from multiple donors rather than one. Genuinely quality hair, priced below raw due to multi-donor sourcing.

Remy Hair

Hair where the cuticle direction has been preserved root to tip. True Remy requires the collection and handling method that only single-donor raw hair reliably guarantees, though the term is widely (and often inaccurately) used across the industry.

Non-Remy Hair

Hair collected from multiple sources with cuticles running in mixed directions, typically acid-stripped and silicone-coated to fake smoothness. Lower cost, significantly shorter lifespan.

“Knowing five or six terms changes an entire consultation from confusing to genuinely useful.”

Single Drawn

Hair sorted with its natural length variation intact, creating a soft, natural taper toward the ends. More affordable than double drawn.

Double Drawn

Hair that's gone through an additional hand-sorting process removing shorter strands, resulting in uniform thickness from root to tip. More expensive, holds fullness longer.

Re-Tipping

The process of removing a worn keratin bond and applying a fresh one to the same extension hair, allowing raw hair to be reused for years instead of replaced.

Cuticle

The outer protective layer of the hair strand, made of overlapping scales. When aligned in one direction, hair is smooth and tangle-resistant; when disrupted, hair tangles and mats.

Bond

The point of attachment between extension hair and natural hair — a keratin tip for K-tips specifically, though the term applies broadly across extension methods.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Understanding these terms turns a K-tip consultation from something you're just nodding along to into a conversation where you can ask informed questions and evaluate what you're actually being offered. It's a short list, and it's worth knowing before you buy.
