K-Tips for Fine, Fragile Edges: A Cautious Approach
Clients with fine or fragile edges are often told extensions aren't an option for them at all. After 21+ years behind the chair, I disagree — but I do think it takes real caution, smaller bonds, and honest placement decisions to do it safely.
PART ONE: Why Edges Need Special Care
The hairline and edges are typically the finest, most fragile hair on the head, and they're also under the most tension from ponytails, buns, and edge styling over the years. Placing standard or large bonds directly on fragile edge hair adds weight and tension that hair in that state often can't support.
PART TWO: The Safer Approach
For clients with compromised edges, we recommend using the smallest available bonds, placing them further back from the hairline where hair is naturally stronger, and using fewer bonds overall along the perimeter even if it means slightly less volume there. Raw, lightweight hair matters enormously here — heavier processed strands add unnecessary pull to hair that's already fragile.
"With fragile edges, less is more. I'd rather under-place along the hairline and keep a client's natural edges healthy than chase maximum volume and cause more damage."
PART THREE: What to Watch For
If you notice increased shedding, tenderness, or thinning specifically around bonds near the hairline, that's a sign the bond size or placement needs to change immediately — not a sign to push through it. A good stylist will reassess rather than insist the technique is fine.
