K-Tips for Layered Haircuts: A Blending Strategy
Layered haircuts are beautiful but genuinely more complex to add extensions into, and after 21+ years behind the chair, I approach layered clients differently than clients with one-length hair.
PART ONE: Why Layers Complicate Placement
Different layer lengths mean bonds placed uniformly across the head will create uneven results — shorter layers may show bonds that longer layers would hide, and length additions need to follow the existing layer structure rather than ignore it.
PART TWO: Working With the Layers, Not Against Them
We typically place bonds slightly higher in shorter layer sections and adjust extension length section by section to maintain the layered shape rather than flattening it into one uniform length. This preserves the movement and shape the client chose their haircut for in the first place.
"The goal with layered clients isn't to erase their haircut, it's to enhance it. That means customizing placement and length section by section rather than applying a one-size approach."
PART THREE: Why Raw Hair's Natural Movement Helps
Raw hair moves and falls the way natural hair does, which is essential for blending into a layered cut convincingly — processed hair with less natural movement tends to look separate from the layers rather than integrated into them.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Layered hair and K-tips work well together with a customized, section-by-section placement plan that respects your existing cut. We carry raw Indian K-tip hair in natural, light ash blonde #18, and platinum blonde #613, up to 32 inches, single and double drawn.
