How to Care for Lace Closures, Frontals, and 360s in a Mesh Install
Lace pieces require a certain level of care. They are fragile, and they were originally made for theater before they were worn every day. The good news is that caring for them is not complicated. It just has to be gentle and consistent.
Here is the lace care routine I teach every mesh install client.
PART ONE: Daily Care
- Hands off the lace. No scratching, picking, or pulling at the lace or hairline.
- Detangle gently. Start at the ends and work up, holding the hair above the lace so you are not pulling on the knots.
- Use a soft brush or wide-tooth comb near the lace.
- Keep product light. Avoid heavy oils, gels, and sprays directly on the lace.
- Use low heat on the hair near the lace.
PART TWO: Washing
- Use moisturizing, sulfate-free products. Harsh or clarifying shampoos dry out the hair and can lift the cuticle.
- Wash in a downward motion. Do not scrub back and forth across the lace.
- Press, do not rub, when drying the lace area.
- Make sure the base dries fully so the scalp stays healthy.
"Treat the lace like silk, not like a weft. Gentle and consistent is the whole routine."
PART THREE: Nightly Care
- Sleep on silk or satin to reduce friction.
- Wrap or loosely braid the hair to prevent tangling.
- Protect the hairline with a silk scarf, especially with frontals and 360s.
Extra care by piece
- Closures (2x6 to 7x7): Be gentle at the part, where the lace gets brushed most.
- Frontals (13x6, 13x7): Protect the hairline from friction and pulling.
- 360s: Watch the nape, where collars and pillows rub, and avoid pulling ponytails too tight.
Maintenance Appointments
Home care keeps the lace healthy between visits. Maintenance appointments keep the base secure and the lace in good condition. Mesh installs can last four weeks up to six months depending on the stylist and the client's maintenance routine.
SIDE BY SIDE: Do and Don't
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Detangle from the ends up | Brush hard at the hairline or part |
| Use sulfate-free, moisturizing products | Use clarifying or harsh shampoos |
| Sleep on silk or satin | Sleep on cotton with loose hair |
| Keep product off the lace | Let buildup sit on the lace |
| Keep maintenance appointments | Skip maintenance |
What to Expect With Good Care
| Factor | What It Looks Like |
|---|---|
| Lace | Stays flat and natural longer |
| Knots | Less shedding |
| Wear time | Toward the longer end of 4 weeks to 6 months |
BOTTOM LINE
Caring for lace is about being gentle and consistent: hands off the lace, detangle from the ends up, wash with sulfate-free products in a downward motion, sleep on silk, and keep maintenance appointments.
