How to Match K-Tip Shade to Grown-Out Roots
Shade matching gets complicated fast when a client's roots have grown out and no longer match the rest of their color. After 21+ years behind the chair, here's how I approach K-tip shade selection when there isn't one single "natural color" to match anymore.
PART ONE: Match to the Root, Not the Ends
K-tip bonds sit at the scalp, which means the extension shade needs to blend seamlessly with whatever is growing in at your root — not the lighter, previously colored length further down. Matching to your ends instead of your roots is one of the most common shade-matching mistakes.
PART TWO: Working With High-Contrast Regrowth
If there's a big contrast between root and ends — dark roots with heavily lightened length, for example — a single shade of extension hair often can't bridge both perfectly. In these cases, we typically recommend matching closer to the root shade and using color melting or toning services to blend the natural length into it, rather than trying to force one extension shade to match two very different natural colors.
"I always tell clients: match your root, not your Instagram photo from eight months ago. Roots grow, extensions don't — the root is your real starting point."
PART THREE: Why Raw Hair Colors More Predictably
Raw hair with an intact cuticle takes toning and blending services far more predictably than processed extension hair, which often reacts unevenly to color due to its already-altered structure. This makes fine-tuning a shade match significantly easier for your stylist.
