Normal Wig Shedding vs. A Real Problem

NORMAL WIG SHEDDING VS. A REAL PROBLEM

Some shedding is normal. But how much is too much? Let me explain the difference.

PART ONE: WHAT'S NORMAL SHEDDING?

Normal: 5-10 Hairs Per Day

If you're losing 5-10 hairs per day when wearing or styling your wig, that's normal. Real human scalps shed 50-100 hairs per day, so wig shedding should be minimal.

Normal: Shedding at the Knots

If you see a few hairs coming from the knots at the base, that's normal. This is how hair is tied to the wig base.

Normal: Initial Shedding

A brand new wig might shed slightly more in the first few wears as loose hairs settle. This decreases after a few washes.

PART TWO: RED FLAG SHEDDING

Red Flag: 20+ Hairs Per Day

If you're losing 20+ hairs daily, something is wrong. This could indicate quality issues or damage.

Red Flag: Shedding Increasing Over Time

If shedding was normal but is gradually increasing, the hair is breaking down.

Red Flag: Bald Spots Forming

If you notice areas of the wig becoming thinner or developing bald spots, the hair is failing.

Red Flag: Shedding With Breakage

If you're losing full-length hairs (not shedding from roots), the hair is breaking. This is a problem.

PART THREE: WHAT CAUSES EXCESSIVE SHEDDING

Poor Quality Hair: Low-grade or non-Remy hair sheds more.

Damage: Bleaching, dyeing, or rough processing weakens hair and causes shedding.

Dryness: Dry hair breaks and sheds. Deep conditioning prevents this.

Rough Handling: Aggressive brushing or pulling causes breakage and shedding.

Product Buildup: Heavy product use creates friction that causes shedding.

BOTTOM LINE

A few hairs daily is normal. 20+ per day or bald spots forming means your wig is failing and it's time to upgrade.
