Traveling With I-Tip Extensions: What to Know

Travel brings up a few I-tip-specific questions I don't get with other extension methods, and after 21+ years behind the chair, here's what I tell clients heading out of town.

PART ONE: Will Metal Beads Set Off Airport Security

No — the beads used in I-tip extensions are far too small and numerous to trigger metal detectors, and they're a completely normal, common sight to airport security staff. This is one of the most common (and unnecessary) travel worries clients bring up.

PART TWO: Flight and Climate Care

Braid loosely before a long flight to prevent friction tangling, and pack a travel-size moisturizing conditioner (Joico is our standing recommendation for raw hair) to combat dry cabin air, which pulls moisture from any hair fast.

"I get asked about airport security surprisingly often. It's genuinely a non-issue — focus your travel prep on moisture and friction protection instead."

PART THREE: Swimming and New Water Sources

Pre-wet hair and apply leave-in conditioner before pool or ocean swimming, and rinse thoroughly afterward. Unfamiliar tap water in some destinations can be harder or more mineral-heavy than what your hair is used to — an occasional clarifying rinse can help during longer trips.

THE BOTTOM LINE

I-tips travel well — metal beads are a non-issue at security, and a little moisture-focused prep handles the rest. We carry raw I-tip hair from 14 to 32 inches in a range of natural and blonde shades.
