Traveling with K-Tip Extensions: A Packing and Care Guide

Travel throws a lot at raw hair K-tips — dry cabin air, pool chemicals, unfamiliar tap water, and less time for a proper routine. After 21+ years behind the chair, here's what I tell every client packing for a trip.

PART ONE: Before You Fly

Braid your K-tips loosely before any long flight to prevent friction tangling in an airplane seat, and bring a small travel-size moisturizing conditioner (we always recommend Joico for raw hair) to combat the extremely dry cabin air, which pulls moisture from hair fast.

PART TWO: Pools, Oceans, and Chlorine

Wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner before swimming — pre-saturated hair absorbs less chlorine or salt water, which can dry out and roughen the cuticle. Rinse thoroughly immediately after swimming rather than waiting until you're back at the hotel.

"Chlorine and unfiltered ocean water are hard on any hair, but raw hair's advantage is that it recovers well with proper aftercare. Rinse fast, condition often, and you'll be fine."

PART THREE: Unfamiliar Water and Climate

Hard or mineral-heavy tap water in some destinations can leave buildup on hair. A clarifying rinse with distilled water occasionally during a longer trip can help. In dry or high-altitude climates, increase leave-in conditioner use to compensate for the extra moisture loss.
