How to Know When It's Time to Remove Your K-Tips
Clients often wait too long or remove K-tips too early, and after 21+ years behind the chair, I've learned there's a clear window that protects both your natural hair and your investment in raw hair extensions.
PART ONE: Signs It's Time
Visible bond growth-out (bonds sitting noticeably far from the scalp as natural hair grows), increased tangling despite proper care, or bonds beginning to feel loose are all signs it's time for a maintenance visit — whether that means removal, re-tipping, or repositioning.
PART TWO: The Typical Timeline
Most raw hair K-tip clients hit this window around 8-12 weeks, depending on how fast their natural hair grows and how well the aftercare routine has been followed. Waiting significantly longer than this increases the risk of matting at the bond site and unnecessary tension on natural hair.
"I'd rather see a client a couple weeks early than a month late. Matting that develops from overdue bonds is avoidable, and it's the number one thing I don't want happening to a client's natural hair."
PART THREE: Why Raw Hair Gives You Flexibility Here
Because raw hair can be re-tipped rather than discarded, timely removal isn't wasteful — it's simply the maintenance point where your existing hair gets refreshed and reused, extending its multi-year lifespan rather than shortening it.
