Mesh + Single Rows: Adding a Lace Piece to a Row Install

Single rows are one of the best ways to add length and fullness. But at the top of the head, where the part is, some clients need more than rows can give. Maybe they are thinning at the part, or maybe they want a part that looks like scalp. That is when I add a lace piece to the row install.

Mesh pieces can be integrated into almost any install type, and single rows are one of my favorite pairings. In this guide, I will explain how to combine a mesh install with single rows.

PART ONE: Why Combine Mesh and Rows

  • Rows for length and fullness through the back and sides
  • Lace for a natural part at the top
  • Coverage for thinning at the part or crown
  • A custom hybrid that looks completely natural

PART TWO: Planning the Hybrid

Choose the rows

Invisible bead sewn-in single rows or beaded single rows, depending on the client's budget and goals.

Choose the lace piece

A 2x6 for a single natural part, a 4x4 or 5x5 for a middle and side part, or a 6x6 or 7x7 for broad coverage at the top.

Map the placement

Rows sit below the lace area. The lace sits where the client parts. Decide this in the consultation.

"Rows do the heavy lifting. The lace does the finishing. Together they give length, fullness, and a part that looks like scalp."

PART THREE: The Install

  1. Install the rows through the back and sides.
  2. Create the base for the lace at the top, with natural hair pulled through micro beads to form a flat base.
  3. Sew the lace piece onto the flat base without stretching it.
  4. Blend the lace hair into the rows and natural hair.
  5. Cut and style so everything moves together.

Matching

The lace hair and the row wefts have to match in shade and texture. Our lace pieces come in multiple shades and textures and can be custom colored.

SIDE BY SIDE: Rows Alone vs Rows + Mesh

Factor Rows Alone Rows + Mesh
Length and fullness Yes Yes
Natural scalp-like part Uses natural hair Lace piece
Thinning at the part Limited coverage Covered
Lace care None Required

What to Expect

Factor What It Looks Like
Install A longer, custom appointment
Wear time Mesh: 4 weeks up to 6 months depending on stylist and maintenance
Maintenance Rows and lace maintained together

BOTTOM LINE

Combining a mesh install with single rows gives clients length and fullness from the rows and a natural, scalp-like part from the lace. Plan placement in the consultation, match the lace to the wefts, and maintain both together.
